Bolgheri and Super-Tuscan full-day, private winery tour

Bolgheri and Super-Tuscan wine tour details and itinerary

This tour will take you to Bolgheri, a small village near the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany and famous as the birthplace of the poet Giosuè Carducci, and now even more so for its "Super Tuscan" wines, including Sassiccaia, a blend of Cabernets, and the Grattamacco and Ornellaia wine estates.

In this coastal wine region mostly French grape varietals are grown – Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. In former times,  the producers had to classify these wines as table wines because they did not conform to the DOC regulations for Chianti wine. The producers aimed to create a wine that would be accepted on its own merits by consumers. After the huge success of these "table wines" all over the world, the authorities allocated them their own denominations, namely Bolgheri DOC and Sassicaia DOC.

Bolgheri is now almost an exclusive sea-side club packed with boutique wine producers, including important names such as Antinori, Gaja, Frescobaldi, Cavallari, Michelse Satta, etc. Because these wineries were built from the ground up on largely uninhabited territory, many of the richer companies were able to build stunning wineries that are functional objects d'art. Among the best known are Petra and Rocca di Frassinello.
